FALL GARDEN TIPS

Fall Garden TipsPlant shrubs and trees now. Autumn is the 2nd Spring. Fall plantings will grow a strong root system during winter and have a head start for next spring.

Fertilize trees, shrubs and perennials now. Fertilize fruit trees as well, making sure to pick up any fallen fruit. Check out our fertilizer schedule.

Retain fallen leaves for the compost pile. Make sure not to add grass clippings that have been treated with weed & feed. Toss compost pile regularly.

Cutback and divide perennials and give extra to friends! Cutback deciduous grasses once they are dry.

Deadhead flowers and harvest herbs and cutting flowers for drying.

Start cool weather annuals such as calendulas, pansies, primrose, snapdragons, nemesia, Iceland poppies.

Start cool season vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, kohl rabi, radishes.

Aerate, de-thatch and fertilize existing lawns. Use a fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. Note : Make sure when using weed & feed type products that your lawn trees aren’t shallow rooted.

This is the best time to start or reseed a lawn.

Add 4” or so layer of organic mulch to beds to keep weeds down and eventually break down and enrich your soil naturally!
