WHY IS MY FRUIT TREE NOT FRUITING?
- AGE Some trees need 3 to 4 years and older trees need consistent feeding and correct pruning to continue to fruit.
- FROST during bloom time = no fruit.
- POLLINATION Certain trees need another neighboring pollinizer and some varieties even need a specific type of pollinizer . Exp. Apples just need another tree in the neighborhood while Bing Cherries need either a Stella, Van Rainier or Black Tartarian to fruit.
- RAIN during bloom time can cut production because of disease and/or flowers getting knocked off.
- PRUNING mistakes. Know how and when to prune your fruit tree. Get the correct information from trusted sources, such as the Sunset’s Western Garden book. Exp. Cherries resent pruning while Japanese varieties of plums need annual pruning.
- CHILLING Again know your tree and zone. Each type of fruit tree needs a certain number of hours below 45 degrees to set fruit.
- WATER Too much water causes fruit to do drop especially persimmons. Do a fruit tree a favor and do not plant them as lawn trees. They prefer deep infrequent watering.
- FERTILIZERS Fruit trees need regular feeding for abundant crops and healthy strong limbs to hold them.
